Lin Ruhai (林如海) is a Yangzhou scholar-official, husband of Jia Min and father of Lin Daiyu. In the begining of the story he send his daughter to the Rongguo mansion after the death of his wife. A few months later, in the chapter 12, he send a letter to his wife's family asking them to return his daughter to him.
